Remedios Varo (1908–1963) was a Spanish-born surrealist painter known for her mystical, dreamlike imagery and deeply imaginative narratives. Born in Anglès, Catalonia, Varo studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where she was influenced by both classical techniques and avant-garde ideas. She fled the Spanish Civil War and later the Nazi occupation of France, eventually settling in Mexico City in 1941, where she found a vibrant community of artists and intellectuals. Varo’s work, often centered around alchemy, science, magic, and the inner workings of the mind, reflects her fascination with esotericism and the occult. Her meticulously detailed paintings feature enigmatic female figures, fantastical architecture, and symbolic machinery, creating a unique visual language that bridges the rational and the mystical. Today, she is considered one of the most important figures of 20th-century surrealism, particularly within the Latin American context.
