Esteban Chartrand

Esteban Chartrand, born 11 October, 1840, in Limonar, province of Matanzas and died in Hoboken (New Jersey) on 26 January, 1884. A Cuban painter, a specialist in landscape painting.

Encouraged by his mother, Luisa Carlota Dubois, herself a pianist and portraitist, Esteban Chartrand shows very early, like his brothers and Philippe Auguste, provisions for the arts. Born into a wealthy plantation family of French origin, he made at the age of 14 years a study trip to Paris. A decade later, in 1864, he was again in Paris where he was a pupil of Theodore Rousseau who shaped the landscape painting . Back in Cuba the following year, he quickly found success, outlines in his home province and in Havana, where he received his first awards in 1866 and 1867. In 1870, he exhibited in the US, where his family had also interests.

In the early 1880s, he moved to Hoboken in New Jersey, to cure his tuberculosis. He died shortly after, at the age of 43 years.
